The Progression of a Healthy Life

Welcome to my blog. I am a health enthusiast, fascinated by the many facets of this broad subject. I enjoy knowing how our bodies work and how to maximize life by encouraging a healthy lifestyle. I have tried many things in my (thus far) short life, which consists of 26.5 years. My foray into the world of health started at the age of 12, when I was diagnosed with depression and put on Paxil, which led to a 20 lb. weight gain very quickly. I decided for myself that exercise was the answer to my depression, as this "miracle drug," which was new to the pharmaceutical scene at the time, only made me want to eat chocolate chip cookies, which I did constantly. Doesn't matter that I made them myself- I also ate them myself, which is never good.

Hundreds of hours later, I sit here in a coffee shop in Texas, healthier than I've ever been in my life due to years of nutrition and exercise study and research. I'm in grad school, with a concentration on Health Education, minor in Communication. I want to teach normal people how to be healthy, without miracles, without scams. I didn't grow up with nutritionists, I didn't play sports in school and I had people around me who constantly struggled with weight and health issues- much like many other people. I took the time to learn how to be healthy for myself, which is the only way I believe one can achieve successful health outcomes, short of having a personal assistant there to guide you every step of the way. My goal is to experience healthy processes for myself which I can then translate to fit the lifestyles of other normal Americans, like myself.

I am a nutrition freak, I admit. I'm fascinated by WHAT food can do for my body, not just how much weight it can help me lose. That should never be the sole purpose of nutrition. I love how real food tastes, but I admit it is acquired if you have never been exposed to real whole foods. This doesn't mean I am a saint who has never given in to temptation. I can't control my cravings- sometimes they are so all-consuming that I eat far too much of a bad thing. Like ice cream. And beer. I LOVE BEER.

The point of this blog is to track my progress, not only for myself but so someday someone may be able to see the things I have done and been through and relate, feel self-motivated enough to take the next step in their own health journey. I am happy with how I look (for the first time in my life, as I have been overweight for the majority of it) and I am happy with the constant progress I make in my workouts, despite all the setbacks that normal "weight loss" and "health" programs do not typically allow for.

Achieving your optimum level of health is a completely personal thing, a completely unique series of events for everyone. It's not something you do for 30 days and then you stop, it's an evolution of your thinking, habits and then of your physical manifestation. It's not a linear timeline, and you don't have to start at the beginning when you stray from the path to your goals. sometimes you have to create a new path which will get you to where you want to be until you're ready to get back to the original one. The point is, any progress (or digress) you make is made in a forward motion, so there's no way you won't get there if you keep moving in the right direction.

Thank you for witnessing my expedition to true health.
